JammehGuinean police on Wednesday seized 75 kilos of cocaine at the port of Conakry, guinee360.com reported.

The illegal drugs were found on a Spainish ship whose final destination is The Gambia, Guinea’s police spokesperson Commissioner Boubacar Kassé told local media.

Commissioner Kassé said the special forces combed through 286 containers before they discovered the hard drugs. The anti-drugs police squad discovered the suspicious package in one of the containers, Commissioner Kassé said, failing to disclose the identity of the ship’s ship’s arrested captain

West Africa has become a hub of cocaine trafficking and smuggling resulting to several arrests and prosecutions of former senior Bissau-Guinean officials. As a result, Conakry authorities have been compelled to intensify the fight against an illegal trade that has taken huge toll on human life and regional economies.

The seizure happened at a time when representatives from Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde were holding a conference aimed at combating trafficking and smuggling of illegal drugs in Conakry. The sub-regional meeting also helped the West African states to halt trafficking of drugs and circulation of small arms.
