WAG To Honour Late Pesident Jawara

The Writers Association of The Gambia (WAG) will host a Book and Photo Exhibition in Honor of Late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara on 27 September 2019 at American Corner from 5-7 pm.

The event is to pay tribute to the late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, the First President of the Republic of The Gambia, who was born on 16 May 1924, and passed away on 27 August 2019, at the  age of 95, at his resident in Fajara.

As part of the event, “Remarks on the life and literary engagements of late Sir Dawda Jawara by Mr. Hassoum Ceesay- Director General of the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Hon. James Gomez- Minister of Fisheries and Water Resources, Mr. Dawda Jawara- son of late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara; Prof. Fodeh Baldeh, Publisher and Editor- Fulladu Publishers will be featured.

“There will also be an exhibition of books by Gambian writers and photo exhibition of late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara by the National Center for Arts and Culture (NCAC),” Modou Lamin Age-Almusaf Sowe WAG Secretary General stated in an invitation letter addressed to the media.

Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara. Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara who was born in Barajally Village in the Central River Region (formerly- MacCarthy Island Division) – died at his resident in Fajara, in the Kanifing Municipality.

The First Gambian President from 18 February 1965 to 22 July 1994 was overthrown by Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia Armed Forces. Mr Jammeh who was widely condemned for his dictatorial and was defeated through Coalition Government led by Adama Barrow in the December 2016 presidential elections.
The late Mr Jawara– a politician and veterinarian spent years in exile in the United Kingdom after been overthrown, before returning to The Gambia.

Jawara was the first Gambian Prime Minister as well during the colonial eras, before becoming a President.

Mr Sowe in his letter recollected that WAG elected its current new Executive during the event marking commemoration of the World Book and Copyright Week Celebrations 2019, and their 10 Year Anniversary, on 27 April 2019 at the Alliance Francais.

“The 11-member executive is largely composed of youths who have amply demonstrated energy and enthusiasm to serve the Association and support fellow Gambians in schools to improve their English, both in writing and reading,” he concluded.
