US Damns Gambia’s Severe Response To Peaceful Protest

JammehThe United States government has condemned what is calls “The Gambia’s severe response to recent peaceful protests.”

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson John Kirby, the United States has called for “an immediate end to violence and urge all Gambians to exercise restraint and calm.”

The statement is issued following the arrest, detention and reported brutal torture of opposition activists demanding for electoral reforms. One of the severely tortured activist, Ebrima Solo Sandeng, died and buried in the bush while some are reported to be in a coma.

The United States condemns the Government of The Gambia’s severe response to recent peaceful protests.  We call for an immediate end to violence and urge all Gambians to exercise restraint and remain calm.

The United States calls on the Government of The Gambia to uphold its international obligations under the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.
