Ousainou Darboe and Sir Dawda Jawara

The leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party has extended his party’s felicitations to the ousted Gambian President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara who turned 90 years on May 16th.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe wishes Sir Dawda good health and long life. “On behalf of my party members, supporters and family, I pray that you live several more years. We pray that Allah prolongs your life and continue to shower you with prosperity and good health,” Mr. Darboe said.

The UDP leader gave thanks and praise to God for “for giving the Gambia a man like Sir Dawda whose modesty is an exemplary lifestyle for Mankind. During Sir Dawda’s tenure of Presidency he never celebrated his birth,” Mr. Darboe said. He said Sir Dawda’s birthdays have been celebrated in low key manner. In that he never seeks or attracts fanfare.

“Sir Dawda’s modesty is a beacon for all of us to emulate as a people,” Darboe added, saying the former President’s birthday is a moment of accomplishing, completing and surviving eight full decades of life in good health.

Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara led the Gambia into independence on February 18th, 1965 and ruled the country until July 1994 when a group of disgruntled soldiers forced him out of power. President Jawara sought sanctuary in Senegal and later England before returning home some years back.
