Sheriff Bojang Elected GPU President

Multimedia Gambian journalist who works for several international media organisations has been elected the President of Gambia Press Union. Sheriff Bojang Jr, a native of Brikama was among several dozens of Gambians journalists exiled by the ousted dictator Yahya Jammeh.

Sheriff won the free and fair contest after outperforming Modou Kanteh. The Congress also elected Mustapha Darboe and Mariatou Ngum Vice President and Treasurer, respectively.

Mr. Bojang returned home from his decade-long Senegal exile to report timely news. His other mission is to champion the cause of Gambian journalists. It is for this reason that he contested for the GPU Presidency. Sheriff revealed the content of his mission during the debate of aspiring candidates.

“I feel both the GPU and Gambian journalism are at a crucial stage which deserves even more attention. I’m running because I feel strongly that together with my colleagues, I can help make GPU the people’s Union where every journalist feels represented, build the capacities of our younger colleagues and advance the welfare of every Gambian journalist,” Mr. Bojang said, promising to ameliorate the plight of young journalists who struggle with low-pay and lack benefits such as health insurance and vacation pay.
