The Gambia’s nation Scorpions have again failed to sting the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the AFCON 2017 qualifier. A second half goal was enough to put the Lions on top of the game at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Sunday.

Both sides played first half without scoring goals, although they each had chances that were not properly executed. The lions had few half-chances after they were given freedom of space by the Scorpions.

The Scorpions should have led the match in the 29th minute when Pa Amat Dibba missed a chance to slot in a goal. This built up momentum within the host camp but the Lions decided to solidify their defence to prevent catastrophe.

The second half of the game started in similar fashion but Cameroon looked more businesslike as evidenced by their ball control. And a defensive blunder in the 65th minute opened the scoring for the Lions. The Lions should have extended their lead in the 70th minute when Choupo Moting’s shot was deflected.

The Scorpions fought hard to remain in top form and almost grabbed an equalizer on the stroke of full-time but the Lions would not allow their 1-0 victory to slip by.
