NYC Regrets Tragic Boat Accident

For Immediate Release

The National Youth Council – The Gambia is saddened and bereaved by the news of the tragic boat accident in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mauritania on 5th December 2019. The incident is reported to have claimed the lives of at least 58 migrants mainly Gambian youth and many others critically injured. According to media reports, the boat, believed to be carrying over 150 people departed the coast of The Gambia on 27th November 2019.

Our heartfelt condolence goes to the families of departed souls and we pray for Allah to give them the fortitude and strength to bear this great loss; not only to the affected families but the entire nation.

While we regret and mourn this irreplaceable loss to The Gambia, it is our firm conviction that it is avoidable. We therefore call on Government to;

a. Immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the departure of the boat from The Gambia and take appropriate legal and remedial actions;

b. Priorities and increase investment in youth development particularly employment creation;

c. Ensure proper coordination and accountability for resource allocated or mobilized for migration management.

Meanwhile, we encourage young people to be cautious of criminal groups engage in human smuggling and trafficking of vulnerable persons.

May the gentle soul of our departed brothers and sisters rest in eternal peace.
