Never Forgotten: The Day Innocent Blood Was Spilled

Former Gambian student leader and season poet Omar Joof

By Omar Joof (A man who never forgot the trauma of April 10/11 as a key witness)

It’s that time of the year again

After days weeks months add up the tally
It feels like we’re yet to reach tomorrow
Time itself seems not have moved
And we are stuck and suck in the moment
Our pains and injuries ever so constant
Yet it’s a year since our last commemoration

It’s that time of the year again
When the feast of Easter hits home
The elements all geared in harmony
The Savannah exhales life in the mornings
Farmers caught in the moment’s meanings
Extreme corners of barns explored
Available foods and seeds examined

It’s that time of the year again
When schools meet to compete in sports
Bringing glory to region and school
Head masters abandon their offices
To give support to sports officials
And parents generous to their children
All restrictions and frugalities compensated

It’s that time of the year again
When April 10th/11th looms monumental
And we remember the committed murders
Which sets us far apart from you
Your orders to murder against our youths
In their peaceful quest to attain justice
And up against your ennobled jurors

It’s that time of the year again
When we remember our martyred comrades
Your crimes against us emerge so callous
Keeping us long distance apart
A situation worsened by your arrogance
Our resolve to fight harder from today
With certainty to attain justice tomorrow

  1. Omar, it’s not just the commemorations but April 10 & 11 remains unforgettable distinctive tragedy in the annals of our country history…. The matter of fact is, justice no matter temporally elusive at moment, will eventually get to serve in the end NO matter how long it takes; we are in the know who the trigger-happy murderers are & who sanctioned…. The Gambia is bigger & greater than any murderous satanic lunatic… God helps & bless Gambia; Ameen.
