Lamin Waa Juwara was a firebrand opposition figure!

The Gambia’s former Land Minister’s legal nightmares have continued to add up. Lamin Waa Juwara was last week arraigned before Magistrate Jobarteh of Brikama. He was charged with abuse of office.

Mr. Juwara denied the charge proffered against him. He was granted bail in the sum of D500, 000 with two Gambian sureties.

Court records stated that the former Lands and Minister abused the authority of his office in 2012, when he created Sinchu Gidom as a village and appointed one Bubcarr Sillah as an alkalo (head of the village). Mr. Juwara’s action, according to the charge sheet, was prejudicial to the alkalo and elders of Jamburr village. He was blamed for creating a village within a village.

Lamin Waa Juwara returns to the dock on September 17, 2014.

Mr. Juwara, once firebrand opposition politician during and after the transition from military to civilian rule, defected to the ruling APRC. He was appointed a governor and minister until his removal from office. The man who earned the title of Mbarodi, meaning a lion in Fula language, has since been embroiled in legal battle upon legal battle. He is also facing several charges, including negligence of official duties, at Banjul Magistrate’s Court.

Ndeysaan. He had all the respect and dignity as a UDP politician but then he couldn’t control his personal ambition and ended up blowing it all up.

Aa takita Darboe la. Aa baramataa.

  2. Lafia La, Mr Juwara has the mentality of many first Republic politicians, they refuse to accept the new comers to politics after the 1994 coup. His refusal to operate accordingly in the UDP all boils down to the notion that, they are the only career politicians. I feel sorry for him though. I met him at some UDP rallies, and he was well receive and respected. Lawyer Darboe ignored all of Mr Juwara’s blatant undermining even during campaigns. His lowest ebb was after attempting to condone the bloody execution live on TV. That was shocking. This is why, it is incredibly important that, people have sincerity in their faith and action. Much respect to you Lafia La.

Mansata, I was speaking to my UDP friend who knows all about UDP campaign of all years. He corroborated your narration. According to him juwara was given some money and a vehicle in 2001 to lead the campaign in Southern CRR. There was to be a night stop in Kudang and juwara was suppose to give some money to the villagers there to buy a bull and prepare dinner for Darboe’s entourage. Surprisingly, when Darboe arrived there was no dinner and the villagers complained they couldn’t afford a bull. Some key UDP figures got agitated and wanted to confront Juwara who was not even in the village at the time. Darboe said no and asked the villagers how much a bull cost. The villagers replied D5,000.00. Darboe then pulled D5,000.00 and gave it to the villagers to go and buy a bull for supper.

Darboe Jula Sankarangka Boro boro mingna ning kartong mingna.
