Gambian Media Hit With Another Loss

By Abdoulie John

Barely a week after the passing away of veteran layout editor Ahmed Carayol, the Gambian media fraternity is mourning the loss of Sise Sawaneh, a young TV reporter who has been making waves at Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).

Led by Gambia Press Union (GPU) Secretary General Saikou Jammeh, a high powered delegation made a condolence call Thursday to the family of the departed soul, conveying a message of sympathy from the entire media fraternity.

GPU’s Saikou Jammeh, FatuNetwork’s Lamin Njie and CRC media officer Sainey MK Marenah successively gave a glowing eulogy about Sise Sawaneh, inundating the eyes of many people with tears.

On Wednesday, few minutes after the announcement of the fatal car crash that took the life of GRTS reporter and two other people, the country’s media body promptly reacted to the sad news, issuing a statement that was widely shared on social media platforms.

“The committed and hardworking young journalist of great promise is already missed by her colleagues. She was a wonderful human being and an excellent professional,” the press union said in news dispatch endorsed by Saikou Jammeh.

He described her death as a “great loss to the media and the country.”

Other media bodies affiliated to GPU also added their voices to the chorus, celebrating the life of a young female journalist who had made her name in Gambian media history.

While the Women Journalists Association of The Gambia (WOJAG) President, Sarjo Camara, made it clear that her legacy will continue to live on, the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) remembered her as the “one of the most promising female sports journalists.”

Similar sentiments were expressed by the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG), the Network of Freelance Journalists (NFJ), Gambia Wrestling Journalist Association (GAWJA) etc.

Sise Sawaneh was laid to rest this evening in presence of a big crowd.
