The defeated Gambia Democratic Congress candidate in the recent Chairmanship elections in Mansakonko Area Council has once again found himself in police custody.

On May 12, Foday Lang Sarr lost to Landing Sanneh of the United Democratic Party only to be arrested and detained along with four of his relatives for causing violence. The former APRC Jarra Central Member of Parliament was released on bail 24 hours laters. It would take little more than a week before Foday landed himself in police net again. He was dragged to court along with Alagie Ceesay and Saikou Manka charged with fraud. The trio was accused of conspiring to acquire loans from Guaranty Trust Bank through illegal means.

The fraud started with Alagie Ceesay who borrowed the photocopied title deed of one Ebrima Sanneh of Nottingham in the United Kingdom on the pretext of using it as a guarantee to publish his (Alagie’s) unpublished book. Unsuspecting property owner’s brother Fanding gave the document to Alagie who in turn passed it over to Foday and Saikou. The duo used the photocopied document to secure Ebrima’s original title deed at the Ministry of Justice after Lands Ministry officials refused their request. This original document was used as a collateral security to obtain loan at the bank.

The owner of the said property located in Lamin Kerewan in Kombo North flew to the Gambia to prevent his compound from being possessed by the bank. Ebrima took his case to the court. Foday and others briefly appeared in Bundung on Monday, with the presiding magistrate ordering them to be remanded in police custody pending trial.
