Foday Gassama Finally Takes Oath

After more than a week of legal tussle and words of protest, President Adama Barrow’s latest nominated Member of Parliament today takes oath of office. In accordance with clause 3 (1) of the Standing orders, the Clerk of the National Assembly administered the Oath of allegiance to Hon. Foday Gassama at the National Assembly building in Banjul.

Hon. Gassama, a former United Democratic Party Coordinator of West Coast Region, was nominated to replace Ya Kumba Jaiteh. The development came after President Adama Barrow had revoked Jaiteh’s nomination.

The former MP argued that President Barrow erred because he (Barrow) had no constitutional powers to revoke parliamentary nomination after oath of office was administered. Ya Kumba Jaiteh turned to the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutionality of President Barrow’s decision. Her earlier application to bar the Attorney General, Speaker and Clerk of National Assembly from swearing in Mr. Gassama was thrown out last week. This opens the doors for the seat to be filled. The Supreme Court resumes on March 26 to start deliberations on Ya Kumba’s application on the constitutionality of the President’s revocation.

  1. Congrats Hon Gassama. I pray that Allah guide you to the deliver the service for which you are nominated out of over 2 million Gambians. That is to serve the interest of the whole Gambia that elected the parson who nominated you and not just one political party or one constituency.
The Gambia is far bigger than a political party or a party leader, and certainly even bigger than a nominated NAM. Once again, CONGRATS!
