Imam CeesayAn erudite Muslim cleric has warned against misuse of the social media. Imam Momodou Ceesay of Detroit Islamic Center would not understand why some people are in the habbit of using the social media as a vehicle to expose their private organ.

“It has come to my knowledge that some men and women expose their private parts on the social media,” Imam Ceesay said in his weekly religious program on Kairo Radio. “This is haram [forbidden] by Allah who wants human beings to dress up decently so they maintain their honour, dignity and decency.”

The respected cleric quoted a Quranic verse, saying Allah enjoined “believing men and women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent and to draw their veils and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husband’s sons, their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their women, or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women.”

Imam Ceesay said it is a pity that most people do not understand that “Islam is a complete way of life and that each and every aspect is designed by our Creator to advance happiness, healthy communities and ease the path to eternal bliss in Paradise. Allah wants people to dress up decently so we can be distinguished from animals. He created tales that cover animals’ private parts,” Imam Ceesay, describing modesty as a “sign of respect for oneself and others in Islam.”

He said Islam designs dress code for both men and women to protect the society, and promote modest dressing. “Claims of sexual harassments are rampant in societies that have improper dress code,” Imam Ceesay added, condemning people who expose themselves on the internet. “The internet, in particular, the social media is a world of its own; only people who go there know what happens there. But I want people to know that Allah knows whatever they do – whether in the open or secret. Stay away from this sinful behaviour if you don’t want to incur Allah’s wrath in the next world where only your good deeds will bail you out.”
