President Yahya Jammeh has terminated the services of the Gambia’s High Commissioner to Senegal. Samba Faal was one of the longest serving mayors in the city of Banjul. He was assigned to the diplomatic service after he lost the mayoral seat to an independent candidate in the last local government elections.
Samba Faal, also a former sports minister, is a key ally of President Jammeh. He has been instrumental in promoting the agenda of the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction party. Embassy sources said Mr Faal’s termination came as a big surprise to him. No explanation has so far been advanced for the abrupt removal of the Banjul native.
Mr. Faal’s case symbolises re-affirms President Yahya Jammeh’s ability to shock his allies without explanation.
Samba Faal lost mayoral race to a semi-literate outsider in 2012. Abdoulie Bah’s victory had raised hope among many Banjulians who punished Mr. Faal for failing to fix the broken city’s many problems. However, Mayor Bah turns out to be a total disappointment to Banjulians. Mayor Bah soon mended fence with the APRC thereby replacing Samba Faal as the favorite of President Jammeh.
