cote d'ivoireThis year’s African Cup of Nations hosted by Equatorial Guinea is loaded with stunning goals, shock exits and the critical draws to decide qualification to the quarter finals. Controversy and drama have already clouded the tournament well before it reaches the knock out stage.

Cameroon finished bottom of Group D while a raffle qualified Guinea at the expense of Mali. A similar development in 1988 saw Algeria through quarter finals at the expense of Ivory Coast.

Quarter finalists are Congo, Congo DR, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast and Algeria. The two Congos open the quarter final match on Saturday.

But the dismal and poor performance by our immediate neighbour have left Gambian soccer fans switching support to Ghana, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal have to conquer their dressing room problems which follow the players into the pitch if they want to excel in football. Fans cannot understand why a national team that has enjoyed an enormous government support and also endowed with highly talented and experienced international guns could not advance to the next stage.
